The Powerhouse, Wolverhampton
Customer: Jacobs
The Powerhouse in Wolverhampton is a former powerhouse and would have provided electric light to the local people. It was constructed in brick during the nineteenth century and was subsequently extended with reinforced concrete.
In January 2005 Nicholls Colton were instructed by our client Jacobs to carry out an investigation of the structure to allow an initial assessment to be made for future remediation works.
Works included sampling and testing of bricks, mortar and concrete in addition to the inspection of structural elements.
A Hilti Ferroscan was used to locate steel reinforcement. Concrete was broken out to expose reinforcing bars for examination. A seating/connection detail between a roof truss and pier was inspected.
Various sampling techniques including coring were used to sample the concrete, bricks and mortar.
Samples were returned to our laboratory for strength testing and chemical analysis.
